How to Choose a Power Bank in Uganda: mAh, Watts, MagSafe and Flying With One
November 4, 2026 · AppleXtreme Store, Kampala
Between long days out, power cuts and phones that do far more than they used to, a power bank is one of the most useful things you can own in Kampala. It is also one of the easiest to buy badly. The number printed biggest on the box is rarely the one that matters most. Here is what to look at, in plain terms.
1. Capacity: what 10,000mAh really means
The mAh figure is the size of the battery cells inside, not what reaches your phone. Some energy is lost turning the cell voltage into USB power, so in practice you get roughly 60 to 70 percent of the printed number. A 10,000mAh bank will refill most iPhones and mid-size Android phones about one and a half to two times, a little less for the big Pro Max and Ultra models.
| Size | Good for |
|---|---|
| 5,000mAh | One top-up in a pocket or a small bag. Light enough to forget it is there. |
| 10,000mAh | The sweet spot for most people: a full day out, or one long power cut, for one phone. |
| 20,000mAh | Travel, two phones, or a phone plus earbuds and a watch. Noticeably heavier. |
| 25,000mAh and up | Laptops, long trips upcountry, or a household that keeps losing power in the evening. |
2. Watts: how fast it charges
Capacity is how much; watts are how fast. For a phone, look for a USB-C port with Power Delivery (PD) at 20W or more. That is what gives an iPhone or a Samsung its fast charge. Anything around 30W, like the Anker 533 PowerCore 30W, also has enough to charge an iPad and keep a MacBook Air going. For a MacBook Pro or a gaming laptop you want a laptop-class bank with 65W or more from a single port, otherwise the laptop drains faster than the bank can fill it.
Check the cable too. A slow cable caps a fast bank. A good USB-C to USB-C cable such as the Anker Zolo braided cable (rated for 240W) means the bank, not the cable, decides the speed.3. MagSafe and Qi2: is wireless worth it?
A magnetic power bank snaps onto the back of the phone, so you can keep using it while it charges, with no cable hanging off. It is the most convenient kind, but wireless charging is slower and wastes more energy as heat than a cable does. MagSafe and Qi2 packs work with iPhone 12 and later (except the iPhone 16e, which has no MagSafe magnets) and with Android phones that have a magnetic case. Qi2 packs such as the Powerology Vision 10000mAh charge at up to 15W wirelessly and still have USB-C ports for a faster wired top-up when you need it.
Our rule of thumb: magnetic for everyday convenience, a wired 10,000mAh or 20,000mAh bank for power cuts and travel. Many people end up with one of each.
4. Small things that make a big difference
- A built-in cable. Banks like the Anker Zolo 10000mAh have the USB-C cable attached, so you are never stuck with a bank and no cable.
- Pass-through charging. Lets the bank charge your phone while it is plugged into the wall itself. Handy at night with one socket.
- A screen or percentage display. You know exactly how much is left instead of guessing from four dots.
- How long it takes to refill. A big bank with slow input can take all night. Look for USB-C input of 20W or more.
5. Flying with a power bank
Power banks always go in your hand luggage, never in checked bags. Airlines follow the same basic limits: up to 100Wh is allowed without asking, 100 to 160Wh needs the airline's approval, and over 160Wh is not allowed at all. To work out watt-hours, multiply the mAh by 3.7 and divide by 1,000. A 20,000mAh bank is about 74Wh, well inside the limit; most banks up to around 26,800mAh stay under 100Wh. The Wh rating is usually printed on the back.
Some airlines have gone further. Emirates, for example, still lets you carry one power bank under 100Wh but no longer lets you use it, or charge it, during the flight. Check your airline's page before you fly, especially if you connect through Dubai, Doha or Nairobi.
