Source: Apple Newsroom, 25 August 2026 · Written for Uganda by AppleXtreme StoreApple has updated the Mac mini, and this time there are two versions: one with the new M6 chip and one with the M5 Pro. Pre-orders opened on 25 August and the machines reached shops on 22 September. The Mac mini with M6 is in stock with us in Kampala now.
If you have been waiting for the right moment to buy a small, quiet desktop for the office, the shop or the home, this is worth a proper look. Here is what changed and who it suits.
What's new: M6 or M5 Pro
The M6 model has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, two more of each than the last generation. It starts at 16GB of memory and goes up to 32GB. Apple says CPU performance is up to 40% better than the M4 Mac mini, with graphics and storage twice as fast and AI work up to four times faster. Those are Apple's own test figures, so treat them as a guide.
The M5 Pro model is the bigger option. You can have up to an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU and up to 64GB of memory. It is aimed at app development, video rendering, 3D work and running large AI models on the machine itself.
Both versions have a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core, which is a first for the Mac mini. Apple's chief hardware officer Johny Srouji called it "the little Mac that can do it all."
Design, ports and connections
It is still a small silver box, roughly five by five inches. Apple says the enclosure is 100% recycled aluminium. Silver is the only finish shown on apple.com.
- Front: two USB-C ports (USB 3) and a headphone jack.
- Back, M6: three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI and Ethernet.
- Back, M5 Pro: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI and Ethernet.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
- Ethernet: 2.5Gb as standard, with a 10Gb option.
The HDMI port means you can connect a monitor or TV you already own. Check what screen and keyboard you will use before you order, so nothing is missing on delivery day.
Performance and AI
For everyday work, the M6 is far more than you need. Excel, Chrome, accounting software, video calls and a few dozen tabs open at once will not trouble it. Apple's own Excel test shows it up to 1.5 times faster than the M4 model.
The extra power shows on heavier jobs. On the M5 Pro, Apple reports Blender rendering up to 1.4 times faster than the M4 Pro. Thunderbolt 5 also lets several Mac minis be linked together to run big AI models, which will mostly interest developers and studios.
It ships with macOS 27. Apple says the new Siri and Apple Intelligence features are still in beta and arrive later this year, in English and a few other supported languages, so do not buy it expecting all of that on day one.
Should you upgrade?
Buy the M6 if you are on an Intel Mac, an M1, or any computer that has started to slow you down. It suits a small business, a school lab, a shop till or a home office. Apple says it is up to 2.3 times faster than the M1 in Excel.
Choose the M5 Pro if you edit video, build apps, do 3D or want to run AI models locally. If you already have an M4 Mac mini and it works well for you, there is no rush.
If you need a screen built in, look at the iMac M6, which is coming soon. If you need more power than a Mac mini can give, the Mac Studio M5 Max is the step up.
Before you buy: ask for a sealed box and check that the serial number matches the box and the machine. Enter it on Apple's coverage check page to confirm it is genuine and not already activated. Be careful with grey imports sold cheaply, since they may have no proper warranty. Use a surge protector or a small UPS with any desktop here, because power cuts and spikes are the usual cause of lost work.Buying in Uganda
