Source: Apple Newsroom, 25 August 2026 · Written for Uganda by AppleXtreme StoreApple has updated the Mac Studio with two new chips, the M5 Max and the M5 Ultra. Pre-orders opened on 25 August and the first machines went on sale on 22 September. Apple's hardware chief Johny Srouji calls it "our most powerful Mac ever".
We have the Mac Studio M5 Max in stock at AppleXtreme Store in Kampala, now at from UGX 9,720,000. If you want an M5 Ultra configuration, message us on WhatsApp and we will quote you. Below is what changed, who it suits, and what to check before you pay.
What's new
The Mac Studio is a small desktop that sits next to your screen. This generation brings a lot more graphics and AI muscle, plus faster connections.
- M5 Max: 18-core CPU (6 super cores and 12 performance cores), up to 40-core GPU, up to 128GB of unified memory.
- M5 Ultra: up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, up to 512GB of unified memory.
- Memory speed: 614GB/s on the M5 Max and 1.2TB/s on the M5 Ultra.
- Storage: Apple says the new SSD design is up to twice as fast.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, a first for the Mac Studio.
Every GPU core on both chips now has a Neural Accelerator. This is the first time an Ultra chip has had them. The 512GB memory option is the last piece, and Apple said it arrives in late October.
Performance in plain terms
Apple says the M5 Ultra graphics are up to 1.8x faster than the previous generation, and the M5 Max is up to 50% faster. For AI work it claims up to 4.3x the peak AI compute of the M3 Ultra. These are Apple's own test numbers, so treat them as the best case, not what every job will get.
The bigger story is memory. A model that will not fit in a normal graphics card can sit in the Mac Studio's unified memory. Apple says you can run very large AI models on the machine itself with no cloud fees. You can also link several Mac Studios with Thunderbolt 5 to share memory, and Apple says four machines give up to 3x faster AI inference than one.
For video and 3D, Apple points to DaVinci Resolve, Maxon Redshift and Foundry Nuke, all running faster than on older Apple chips. Both chips decode H.264, HEVC, ProRes and AV1 in hardware.
Ports and displays
You get up to six Thunderbolt 5 ports at 120Gb/s. The rear also has 10Gb Ethernet, two USB-A ports and HDMI, and the front has two USB-C ports and an SD card slot. It can drive up to eight displays, or four Studio Display XDR at 5K and 120Hz.
There is also Genlock over USB-C, which lets displays sync with professional cameras. That matters to studios and film crews, less to most other people. The Mac Studio ships with macOS 27.
Should you buy it?
Buy the M5 Max if you edit video, grade footage, render 3D, produce music at scale, or write code and run builds all day. It is also a solid choice for a small studio or newsroom that wants one quiet machine that does everything.
Think about the M5 Ultra only if you already know you need it, for example very large AI models, heavy visual effects or a render workflow where hours are money. The extra memory and GPU cores cost a lot.
Skip it if you mostly browse, use Office and WhatsApp, or edit the odd video. A MacBook or the Mac mini M6 is a more sensible fit for that kind of use. The Mac Studio is also a desktop only, so budget for a display, keyboard and mouse if you do not have them.
Before you buy: insist on a sealed box. Check the serial number on Apple's coverage page, and make sure the configuration on the box label matches what you were quoted (chip, memory, storage). Be careful with unusually cheap grey imports. Ask for a written receipt that lists the exact spec.Power and setup in Uganda
A machine at this price should not sit directly on an unprotected socket. Power cuts and surges in Kampala can hurt electronics, so use a good surge protector at minimum, and a UPS if your work cannot afford to lose unsaved files. Keep the cables and displays on the same protected strip too.
If you are on a slow connection, do the large downloads such as macOS updates and big model files at a place with fibre. Wi-Fi 7 only helps if your router supports it.
