Source: Apple Newsroom, 26 October 2026 · Written for Uganda by AppleXtreme StoreApple announced the new iPad mini on 26 October 2026, and it is the biggest change the small iPad has had. It gets an OLED screen, a new chip called the A20 Pro, and a thinner body that is now water and dust resistant. Pre-orders open on 28 October and it goes on sale on 6 November.
If you have been waiting for a small tablet that can do real work, this is the one to look at. Here is what changed, who it suits, and what to know before you reserve one in Kampala.
What's new on the iPad mini
- An 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, with bezels 24 percent thinner than before.
- The A20 Pro chip, made on a 2-nanometre process.
- IP67 water and dust resistance, with a body only 5.4 mm thick.
- A 12MP Center Stage front camera, now on the landscape edge.
- Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through Apple's new N1 chip.
- Storage of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB, in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular.
Display, design and colours
The old iPad mini screen was fine, but it was an LCD. The new one is OLED, so blacks are properly black and the contrast ratio is listed at 2,000,000:1. Typical brightness is 600 nits, and HDR content peaks at 1,200 nits, which Apple says is more than double the last generation. The size of the tablet stays about the same because the bezels shrank.
There is also a nano-texture glass option on the 256GB and 512GB models. It cuts glare, which helps if you read or draw near a window or outdoors in Kampala sunshine. It costs more, so decide if you really need it.
Colours are Midnight, which is new, and Starlight. The Wi-Fi model weighs 255 g and the cellular one 263 g, so it still fits one hand and a jacket pocket.
Performance and everyday use
Apple says the A20 Pro gives up to 4.5 times faster AI work and up to 2.7 times faster graphics than the previous iPad mini, with up to 60 percent faster multithreaded performance. Those are Apple's own test figures, so treat them as a guide. In practice, expect games, video editing, drawing and heavy multitasking to run without trouble.
It ships with iPadOS 27, which brings resizable windows and window tiling, so a small screen can now hold two apps in a more useful way. Apple's new Siri AI is due in beta with iPadOS 27.2, and it is not available in every language or region, so do not buy the iPad mini just for that.
The front camera moving to the long edge matters for video calls. When you prop the iPad in landscape on a stand or Smart Folio, you now look at the person instead of off to one side. The rear camera is a 12MP Wide camera with 4K video up to 60fps.
Accessories
The iPad mini works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). There is also a new TechWoven Smart Folio in navy blue and taupe. In the US these cost $129, $79 and $79. Ask us about Uganda prices when you reserve.
Should you upgrade?
Buy it if you want the best small tablet for reading, note-taking, sketching, travel or use on the go, and the OLED screen is what you have been waiting for. It also suits anyone who needs a second device that is easy to carry to site visits or meetings.
Skip it if you mostly watch films on a bigger screen or type for long hours. A larger iPad, such as the iPad Air 11-inch M4, is the better pick. And if your budget is tight, the iPad Mini 7th Gen is in stock now at from UGX 3,800,000 and still does the job well.
Before you buy: Buy only a sealed box and check the serial number on Apple's coverage page before you pay. Avoid grey imports with no local support. The cellular model is eSIM only, so confirm with your network that it supports eSIM before choosing it. Nano-texture glass cannot be added later, so choose it at purchase.Buying in Uganda
